The description you've painted of young Barbara (bottled it up, too much like her father, etc.) nicely foreshadows what/who we know she'll be in the future.
I've been at enough post-funeral house get-to-gethers, and unfortunately, you've portrayed it accurately and genuinely. You've got people all over the house only there to fulfill social obligations to themsleves and to the family/real mourners (but not really attending to the real mourners). But they really don't matter.
And one of my favorite scenes is Gordon just sitting with his kids, the three of them together in the midst of all that.
Also liked the insightful paragraph where you have Gordon and wife talking about possibilities should he go down in the line of duty--but they hadn't considered she might be the one to go first. Ouch.
The interaction between Bruce and Barbara was so well done. Liked how she was like, Oh, you mean Bruce? at the end.
I'm excited about this story. How will Gordon deal with all the chaos, the cover-up, the kids, life as a single father?
Great, great idea. You're spoiling us terribly, and we're loving it! Thank you for a nice start to a cloudy day!
